Chapter Seven.

Sabine ignored her phone, it was a number she recognised only too well. Her mother had been consistently ringing for the entire morning. Sabine guessed Jason had informed her parents of where she was, and the cat was well and truly out of the bag. There was no other reason. When Sabine and Daniel logged onto her laptop last night, there had been over twenty emails from Jason, thirty from her sister and forty from her mother.

For five weeks while repairs went on around them, they inventoried every box and trunk in the attic. It had been hard labour and Daniel had brought down over twenty trunks of clothing for Sabine. Daniel had logged on the laptop last night to find specialist cleaners for them, ordinary dry cleaning wouldn’t do! The east wing had been quiet, Daniel had got Mr Evans to install a frame around the door. Daniel had explained it as someone had accidentally caused damage to the door.

This morning Sabine had gone through the last trunk and discovered a scroll. It had been sealed in wax, and she was waiting for Daniel who was doing the rounds with Mr Evans. Daniel and Mr Evans had become fast friends over the last few weeks, and Mr Evans was more than happy to share the plans around the Manor with Daniel. As her phone rang again, Sabine growled and shoved the phone under a pillow.

Tapping the scroll with a finger, Sabine wondered what it was, this, she felt held a clue. Her gut told her so. Sabine looked at the wax seal and recognised the pattern as the same one in a ring Daniel wore. It must be the coat of arms for the Marquess Blackwood. Daniel finally entered the room with a smile on his face, and she waved the scroll in his face.

“What’s that?”

“No idea, I found it at the bottom of the last trunk, it’s sealed.”

“Well open it then wench,” Daniel laughed and tackled her, and they fell back on the bed. Laughing Sabine opened the scroll and unrolled it. Daniel reached over and picked up four heavy ornaments to keep it open.

“It’s the family tree,” Daniel said, amazed, “look, that’s my father.” He pointed to one of the last names at the bottom.

“Daniel, there’s you, and four others. Daniel Augustus Harrington, Isabelle Rose Harrington, Annalise Marie Harrington, Richard Edmond Harrington and Henrietta Josephine Harrington. Look, you had one brother and three sisters. Daniel!” Sabine cried as Daniel collapsed back holding his head in pain. He gasped aloud and in desperation, dematerialised. The pain faded, and Daniel reached out to reassure Sabine who gazed with wide eyes around the room searching for him.

“I don’t think I’m meant to know their names,”

Daniel whispered, and Sabine nodded.

“Okay. We won’t mention their names, can you come back?”

“I don’t think I should yet, what else do you see?”

“Daniel, this makes little sense. There are no death dates for any of your family.”

“None?”

“Nothing, no marriage details, no death dates, nothing apart from names and dates of birth.
